Prof Forrest Cary Eggleston

The name of DR Forrest Cary Eggleston can only be written with reverence among those ‘apostles’ of goodwill who travelled long way from the west to Asia and AFrica carrying God’s love to the masses. They were led by their light of the wisdom while their unending determination was their driving force.

Dr Eggleston was a graduate of Princeton University and Cornell Medical College. He did his residency in Surgery from Bellevue Hospital,Columbia University and did his further training in Thoracic surgery. Dr Eggleston worked for a few years in Columbia University, Newyork, when in 1953 he responded to his divine call and travelled to India. He and his wife initially worked for a tuberculosis sanatorium in jubar mission hospital, kasauli in Himachal Pradesh. He was requested by the principal at Christian Medical College, Ludhiana to help start a surgery department in the medical school. He took up the challenge, adopting the first ever American residence system in an Indian Medical Institute. In a span of 33 years from 1953 to 1986, he trained more than 100 surgeons who got dispersed all over the world as excellent surgeons carrying the rich legacy of their boss, a name everyone in CMC used to address Dr Eggleston.

Dr Eggleston served as the DIrector of the college from 1982-86. Boss was known for the miraculous surgeries he performed. He never left any leaf unturned in maintaining strict discipline in his department, he could at the same time, devote attention to even the smallest needs of the people working with him. Boss was a great teacher and served with skill and compassion. He also laid a strong foundation to research activities in the department of Surgery. A separate branch to deal with cancer patients was his brainchild in the seventies. Dr Eggleston served CMC Ludhiana as professor & head of surgery till 1982 and after his tenure as Director in 1986 returned to his homeland. He cherished the spirit of CMC till he left for his eternal abode on 9th December 2016. We dedicate 47th skill course of AMASI as our tribute to our dear boss Dr Forrest Cary Eggleston.

Welcome Message

It gives us immense pleasure to invite you to the 47th AMASI skill course and FMAS examination. The skill course is an academic and accreditation activity of The Association of Minimal Access Surgeons of India, the largest speciality section of Association of Surgeons of India (ASI)

The aim of this skill course is to standardize laparoscopic surgical techniques, and to update the knowledge, keeping up with current trends. During the course of three days, we will try to provide comprehensive skills and knowledge in basic to advanced laparoscopic surgery. Our vision is that every surgeon in India should be trained adequately in the art and science of minimal access surgery and every citizen should have access to quality minimal access surgery.

A written examination and viva voce will be conducted on the last day of the skill course. Successful candidates will be awarded Fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery (FMAS). Founded in 1894 by Dame Edith Brown, Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana, is a charitable premier medical institute of our country that integrates patient care with education and research. This year’s skill course is a tribute to the memory of Late Dr F.C Eggleston, who founded the Department of Surgery at CMC, Ludhiana in 1986.
